Our Classrooms
|
- Our classrooms are set up with the children in mind.
A visitor to our classroom would see a peaceful atmosphere with children
absorbed in doing a variety of activities. The shelves are low and filled
with beautiful materials, which give the children many opportunities to
learn. The children move about the classroom freely, choosing activities
which interest them. As they finish with a material, they prepare it
for the next person and then return it to its original place. This
process inherently encourages respect for their classmates and for the
environment.
- The main curriculum is on the shelves. We call the activities
that the children do “jobs.” One important task that the teacher
has is to prepare the jobs so they are inviting to the children and so
that they progress in difficulty as the year progresses.
- Because the students choose their own work, they have
the opportunity to develop at their own rate. Learning in this manner
is very individualized.
